Positioning a boiler company in Ontario

Ontario has the most heating companies chasing the most homes, so positioning matters more here than anywhere. The boiler companies that win usually own one system, one customer type or one city, and say so plainly.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Ontario is Canada's largest and most crowded heating market, so the boiler companies that do best here are the ones that refuse to be general. A customer in Toronto, Ottawa or Hamilton can find a dozen heating companies in minutes. The only way to avoid being compared on price alone is to be the obvious specialist for one kind of boiler job.

The Ontario market and its buyers

Natural gas was the main heating energy for 58% of Ontario households in 2023, with electricity at 18% and propane at 4%, according to Statistics Canada. The gas base supports condensing and combi niches. The propane share matters in rural and cottage areas, where a different kind of boiler customer lives.

Useful Ontario buyer groups:

  • Older urban homes in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and London with original hot-water radiators.
  • Combi conversion candidates in townhouses and semis across the GTA, where space is tight.
  • Rural and cottage owners on propane or oil, who value a company that will travel and plan ahead.
  • New-home builders offering radiant or hydronic options to buyers.

Seasonality and climate

Southern Ontario winters are cold but moderated near the Great Lakes; Northern Ontario has longer, colder heating seasons. In the south, that creates a predictable replacement season in autumn and a surge of no-heat calls during each cold snap. In the north, reliability and response promises carry more weight, much as on the Prairies.

Regulators to know

For reference only, not compliance advice:

Programs relevant to pricing, as of October 2026

  • Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas run the Home Renovation Savings Program, with rebates on items such as cold-climate heat pumps, smart thermostats and envelope upgrades after an assessment.
  • The Energy Affordability Program offers free upgrades to income-eligible households, including a limited-time stream for oil-heated homes moving to heat pumps.
  • When we checked on 2026-10-22, Ontario had not signed a Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program deal, so no-cost CGHAP retrofits are not on offer there.

Because these programs mostly target heat pumps and envelope work, a boiler company should be cautious about placing them anywhere near its boiler prices. If your Comfort package includes a smart thermostat that may qualify, say so on that line only, with the source and checked date.

A worked example of narrowing in Ontario

Take a 10-truck HVAC company in Ottawa that does about 70 boiler jobs a year among 900 furnace and air-conditioning jobs. On its main site, boilers are one line in a long menu, and boiler enquiries arrive mostly by accident. A separate boiler page set, or a division brand, with three named packages and published starting prices gives those 70 jobs a home. Even a modest lift, say to 90 boiler jobs at an average contribution of $3,500, adds $70,000 of gross margin without touching the furnace business.

How we would position an Ontario boiler company

  1. Narrow by city before narrowing by system. "The combi conversion company in Ottawa" is clearer than "combi specialists across Ontario".
  2. Use proof heavily. In a crowded market, job write-ups, photos and accurately stated registrations do more than any slogan.
  3. Publish prices before competitors do. Most Ontario heating sites still say "call for a quote". Honest starting prices are a visible difference.
  4. Consider a division brand. For a large HVAC firm, a separate boiler brand can cut through where the parent name cannot.

Ontario owners can also see the Ontario-focused parent brand HVAC.Digital alongside HVAC.Agency. Read about positioning-led websites, market positioning, or all areas.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ontario too crowded for a new boiler brand?

Crowded with generalists, yes. Crowded with clear boiler specialists, much less so. A narrow position, such as combi conversions in one city or older-home hydronic work, still has room.

Can we mention TSSA registration in our marketing?

Stating accurately that your company is a TSSA-registered fuels contractor is a factual proof point. Do not imply endorsement by the regulator, and keep the wording precise.

How should we present Save on Energy programs?

The Home Renovation Savings rebates we verified focus on heat pumps, thermostats and envelope work. Keep them off boiler price lines unless an item genuinely applies, and link the program page with a checked date.
